Re: nest boxes

Re: CONFUZZLED MUCH?

We are not allowed to keep cockerels on our land but interestingly someone further away in the village now has one and it is causing uproar in the village. Personally I love to hear this natural sound but then most people don't. Way of the world it seems .....

Re: Chicken eating from my mouth??!

As the human mouth contains more bacteria than a dogs (often including symptom free oral candida dangerous to hens) you may wish to have a chat to your hen about finding an alternative fun activity!!

Bedtime

We introduced our 4 new hens on the 1st of this month and everything is going fine in the day apart from the odd skirmish. Bedtime is a different matter however and each evening the 4 new girls are left outside the coop. The original set are safely in and occupying the front area of the perches prev...

Weeds

OK fellow allotmenteers and gardeners,

My knee is giving severe jip and weeding is now an issue. Although we grow all our crops organically i think the time has come to consider an effective but as kind as possible spray to our many paths. What does everyone recommend?

Re: Layers sample bags?

just try mixing a few pellets in with whatever they do eat and gradually change the ratio so that ultimately there are only pellets. I can't afford Garvo and find Farmgate adequate but they come in sealed bags. It may be worth contacting Marrriages feeds and asking if they have sample packs. They ar...

Re: Straw vs hay vs Sawdust

We use paper shreddings in the nesting boxes. It recycles the paper, is cheap and composts down well on the compost heap. Don't worry about the laying, it will start when they are ready!!
