Dont believe the bile
5 out of 5 stars.
i watched this again on dvd last night and thought I'd throw my hat into the ring on this.
The reviews for Revolver in the UK were so bad, I did actually go and see this in the cinema. Now, I'm no fan of Mr Ritchies previous work (Lock Stock was OK, I hated Snatch, and Swept Away was a disaster), so I wasn't expecting much. What was clear after seeing the movie was that critics had panned the movie because... i don't know - it was his time for a kicking, he was 'Mr Madonna'? It's just a symptom of the mentality of the UK press, because there are so many movies worse than this that get such a better reception.

So why 5 stars from me? Revolver is beautifully (and creatively) shot, edited and directed, has great performances from Statham and Liotta and is constantly entertaining. But what elevates this is the fact that halfway through the movie (around about when Mr Green goes through, and comes back through, a car window), it stops being a gangster movie and enters Fight Club/ Memento territory, and you're left to make your own conclusions.... about existence and the game of life.

The lift scene, where Green battles against him self, is a stunning recreation of the mental dialogue, the inner enemy, that we all (largely unknowingly) battle every hour of the day. The cartoon attack on Lord Johns and Mecha's men, the restaurant shoot out - the movie is stuffed full of memorable scenes.

If you loved the straight gangster movies Ritchie has done before, you'll likely hate this (there were a number of walkouts at the showing I went to). If you want to see a film maker throw off the shackles of his previous work and create something as original as the films of Fincher or Stone or Lynch, give this a chance, but there are no easy answers. Bravo Mr Ritchie, I eagerly await your next release.

Yawn

Same pap as usual. If you've seen one Guy Ritchie film you've quite literally seen them all. (And wasted two hours of your life you'll never get back again). Follows same predictable chopping and changing scenes format with boring meaningless dialog until some equally meaningless violence is dropped in . Visual direction is also dreadful. Steer well clear. Its a stinker.

'worst film EVER!'

Avoid this at all costs. it's not even bad in a funny way. It's a boring, loathsome, pretentious piece of garbage.

Ego trip
3 out of 5 stars.
Revolver, I can't say that I liked watching this film. Throughout it was watchable though at the end I was left wanting. It isn't overly hard to follow but the story seems patchy and over cooked.

The line up is pretty good, Jason Statham well you know what your gonna get with him, always good. Ray Liotta I am a big fan of ever since Goodfellas. He puts in great performance in fact all the actors do a good job.

All the quick cuts, strange lighting and inner monologue was a bit over the top. I though this was just an ego trip by a no doubt capable director. Perhaps if the ego was tempered then the film would have been a lot better as the story and actors are all good.

I have seen previouse work by Guy Ritchie, Lock Stock and Snatch and they are more enjoyable bar all the mockny BS. I think he can make films but if he left the ego outside they would be more impressive.

Left wanting here.

A strange experience
4 out of 5 stars.
I stumbled across this film just as it was starting on Sky Movies, I did like Ritchie's previous films - Lock Stock and Snatch, they were both enjoyable but certainly not masterpieces.

I decided to carry on watching just to see if it was as bad as everyone made out, so I kept watching..... and watching.... and watching but it didnt really turn that bad. It was a little confusing and odd but it really made me work for its attention which is a refreshing experience in this day and age.

Its certainly no classic but some of the imagery and strange millisecond cut scenes, especially when Statham was trying to keep his head together were very haunting and disturbing - great and original film making.

As I said, this film is by no means a classic but it didnt deserve the panning it got. It's though provoking and original and some of the scenes will keep rattling around in your brain for a few days afterwards.

It seems all the amazon reviewers that didnt like it were people who simply loved (or should I say, larrrved) all the one-dimensional mockney gangster capers a la Lock Stock and Snatch, this film is nothing like these efforts and more importantly, its not supposed to be.

Thanks, I'll now dismount my high horse.
