A Collection worth having
4 out of 5 stars.
It follows that for individuals of a certain age and mindset the 1980's will always hold a special place in their affections, even if the memory of that time has been beset by a rosy coloured tinge. But here we have a collection of 30 tracks chosen and put together by Ian Dewhirst, which allows the listener to listen again to many of the seminal records from that period which might be termed '80's Groove'. The term might be contentious but there is no doubting the quality of the selection, which isn't surprising given the fact that Dewhirst was the man responsible for the highly successful original 'Mastercuts' series in the early 1990's (which featured a selection of tracks drawn from various genres of 'black music').

For the price at which this is being sold you really can't argue with the choices that have been made. Some purists might raise an eyebrow at some of the tracks, and the failure to correctly identify the mix of 'You Can't Hide Your Love' by David Joseph - this isn't the original mix or an edit of the original mix but rather a much later remixed version - but that aside the tracks chosen are interesting and varied. It is quite some time since I have seen 'Hungry For Your Love' by Hanson and Davis on a compilation, this really is a nice Kurtis Mantronik production from the mid 1980's which sits well with some other examples of his other work with Joyce Sims ('Come Into My Life' and 'All & All') included in this collection.

It remains a truism that in this market very many collections will feature tracks from a relatively narrow field, with few risks being taken and restrictions on licensing playing their part. As a consequence the buyer is likely to purchase a number of cds which feature the same tracks, and possibly this situation is deemed acceptable because of the inclusion of one obscure or 'not yet available on cd' track. That isn't the case here. There isn't that ONE killer track which collectors are desperately seeking, but there is a consistent quality which makes this a very easy collection to put on and just listen to without wanting to consistently get up and jump or change to the next track. The mixes included are generally the original 7" single versions, although there are a few tracks included in their original 12" guises. The overall mastering of the two cds is good, and the packaging is more than acceptable for the price range.

I recommend this collection wholeheartedly and without reservation. Dewhirst has a rightly earned reputation for being at the helm of quality compilations and that remains the case here. There are a few minor gripes (as listed above) but not enough to justify ignoring this selection. Buy with complete confidence and consider exploring other similar collections issued under the 'Original Selection' legend.
