| Editorial Reviews: | | | | | After the success of 1950's Destination Moon and 1951's When Worlds Collide, visionary producer George Pal brought the classic HG Wells story of a Martian invasion to the big screen, and it instantly became a science-fiction classic and winner of the 1953 Academy Award for Best Special Effects. It's a work of frightening imagination, with its manta-ray spaceships armed with cobra-like probes that shoot a white-hot disintegration ray. As formations of alien ships continue to wreak destruction around the globe, the military is helpless to stop this enemy while scientists race to find an effective weapon. Gene Barry and Ann Robinson play the hero and heroine roles that werede rigueur for movies like this in the 50s, and their encounter with one of the Martians is as creepy today as it was in 1953. It finally takes an unseen threat--simple Earth bacteria--to conquer the alien invaders, but not before War of the Worlds has provided a dazzling display of impressive visual and sound effects. This is a movie for the ages, the kind of spectacle that inspired little kids such as Steven Spielberg (not to mention Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin, whose Independence Day is a remake in all but name) and still packs a punch. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com | |

| War of the Worlds as it should be. | |
| | This DVD release is great. The movie is back in its true glory as only seen when shown on the big screen. Now you can see it in all its Technicolor glory. This movie is based on H.G. Wells classic novel, and is a classic itself. And remember there was no CGI when this was produced. And you will swear you saw a real alien die, as the blood appears to stop pumping through the veins in its arm.
The movie starts off like a newsreel of its time. Showing W.W. I, W.W.II and the war of the future...that leads into the invasion of the Earth by the Martians and the War of the Worlds. They land in what appears to be a Meteor and nothing man can do is able to stop their invasion. We are helpless and it is well portrayed as we follow Dr. Forrester, played by Gene Barry. We see the invasion through his eyes and never leave his side.
The movie is very well directed and edited. The movie does not stall at any point. The story keeps us moving at a steady and exciting pace. The special effects are great for their time and the sound effects are fantastic. They have been used for years since. This film gave Sci-Fi movies a strong hold on the moviegoers.
The extra disc has two complete commentaries, the making of the film, and my favorite extra, the Original Mercury Radio Broadcast of War of the Worlds by Orson Wells. This is a must have DVD for anyone's collection.
| | | Ok, i won't complain about the effects etc because to give it credit, it is old. However this movie just isn't worth the time of spending over one hour watching. The storyline is utter rubbish and it really isn't very greatly made at all! I was surprised by the amount of people whom had said how greater than the remake this is. So we all have opinions but i will say now, this cannot be compared to the remake to the slightest! This doesnt even reach the potential of becoming a classic hit because theres nothing great about it what so ever. Also, to those that have never seen the remake 'may' get a surprise because it's 'a lot' better than this, quite different but definitely better!
| | | | "War of the Worlds" was released in the mid-50's and film technology has made great advances since that time. However, don't under any circumstances overlook this particular gem due to its age. The special effects here are exactly that, but what I like so much about the whole film is the intelligence of the production: the Martians themselves are unseen for most of the film, apart from two brief scenes - it's the Martian spacecraft that really cause a chill. In the same way, the gradual buildup of tension is handled with skill: first, the sighting of an unknown object, thought to be an asteroid, then the eventual realisation that the Earth has been invaded from outer space, the shock that they are planning to destroy the planet and the breakdown into anarchy that makes mankind as destructive as their unwanted visitors. I also enjoyed the mini-documentary type feature in the middle of the film that showed the steps various countries were taking to fight the enemy - I can't help thinking that the British attitude to proceedings was spot on! It does have to be noted that the film does change details of the original novel, essentially keeping only the basic idea of a Martian invasion, and giving religious overtones to the ending which the atheist Wells would never have approved. However, bearing in mind the original was set in Woking, and the film in Los Angeles, I don't think many would complain. If you only watch one science-fiction film in your life - make it this one.
| | | | What can I say. 1950's film, feels like a classic Star Trek episode, sounds like an episode of the classic Battlestar Gallactica and is about as scary as Finding Nemo. The Martians look like big floating boomerangs with shower heads sticking out on top and the cute little camera with the three eyes looks like a colour testing on TV screens thing. It makes you look back to the Doctor Who Daleks which resemble wheely bins with whisks and sink plungers. Reading the above, you may ask, 'why is this a good film'? The answer; 'because it is'! You really have to watch this film to appreciate it... hell, it was an 18 when it first came out and it's now a PG! Though the Paramount/Dreamworks versions follows the book more, this has the original idea of a motion picture based on H.G.Well's masterpiece. Though this film will not have you cowering behind the sofa in terror of the oncoming Martians, it'll have you laughing because of the ancient graphics and over the top acting. Great film, not to be missed.
| | | I Thought This Movie Was Amazing When I seen It! It's Brilliant For a 1954 Movie. It has Really Good Special Effects and A lot Of Action. If You've Seen this movie, it will make the 2005 movie even better than it is.
